A Life Shaped by the Desert
Born in 1840 in Puteaux, Gustave Guillaumet began his training under the guidance of François-Edouard Picot and Félix-Joseph Barrias. His path led him to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Alexandre Abel de Pujol. In 1861, he entered the Historical Landscape category of the Prix de Rome, seeking a scholarship to study at the Academy of France in Rome. Although he did not win that particular prize, his life took a different direction when he traveled across the Mediterranean to Algeria.
Between 1861 and 1867, Guillaumet visited Algeria ten times. These travels were not without hardship; during one stay, he contracted malaria in Biskra and spent three months recovering in a military hospital. This period of illness and the physical reality of the landscape left a mark on his perspective. He often chose to paint during the rising or setting sun, finding a specific light that defined his work.
The Reality of the Sahara
While many artists of the Orientalist movement sought to present an idealized or anecdotal view of North Africa, Guillaumet focused on the harshness and the grit of desert life. His paintings often captured the difficult conditions faced by those living in the region. He did not shy away from the more grim aspects of existence, such as the presence of death or the struggle for survival.
His technique relied on a high naturalism and an economy of means. He used light with great precision, sometimes employing a minimal amount of color that drew comparisons to the way J. M. W. Turner handled atmosphere. Some of his most notable works include:
- The Sahara (1867), which features a camel skeleton in the foreground and a distant caravan appearing like a mirage.
- Evening Prayer in the Sahara (1863).
- The Oasis (1862).
- Dogs of the Douar Devouring a Dead Horse in the Gorges of El Kantar (1883).
- Laghouat, Algerian Sahara (1879).
Final Years and Legacy
Guillaumet was recognized for his contributions to French art, earning the title of Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1878. His work was later collected in various institutions, including the Musée d'Orsay and the Chrysler Museum of Art. In 1888, after his death, a book titled Tableaux Algériens was published, containing etchings, photogravures, and engravings based on his drawings and sketches.
His life ended in Paris in 1887. He is buried in Montmartre Cemetery, where his tomb features a sculpture of a young girl from Bou Saâda dropping flowers onto a medallion of the artist. His son, Gustave Guillaume, would later find his own success as a linguist.
