          A Sketch of the Stour

The sky over the River Stour moves with heavy, uncertain weight. Dark, gestural trees press against the left side of the frame, their branches thick with deep browns and blacks. Through this dark foreground, the eye finds a path toward a distant, hazy village. A church tower rises from the pale light of the background, a quiet marker in the landscape. The air feels damp, filtered through moving clouds that cast shifting shadows across the earth.

The paint is applied with a rapid, tactile energy. Thick impasto strokes create texture on the small support, making the surface feel as rugged as the bark of an old elm. Lines are loose and organic, avoiding sharp outlines in favor of heavy, expressive applications of oil. The palette remains muted, relying on ochre, cream, and patches of pale blue to suggest a world caught in a moment of transition.

          The Weight of the Land

This work captures a specific rhythm of rural life near Dedham, Essex. It is an impressionistic study of light and weather, where the man-made lock and the natural river exist in a state of constant flux. The composition pulls the viewer from the textured, dark foliage into a luminous distance, mirroring the way a sudden break in the clouds might reveal a hidden valley. There is no attempt at theatricality, only a direct observation of the moisture and movement within the landscape.

The scene carries a sense of quiet industry and the slow pulse of the countryside. The lock represents a functional intervention in nature, yet here it is absorbed into the atmospheric haze. Every stroke seeks to translate the feeling of being present amidst the wind and the water. A single, heavy cloud passes.
