The Life and Academic Career of David Berger
Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, David Berger was the son of Edith and Harry Berger. His early life was shaped by his family's involvement in the local Jewish community and the operation of the H. Berger Paper Company and Koffman Paper. After attending public schools in Lawrence, he enrolled in the Massachusetts School of Art, where his studies were interrupted by military service in the U.S. Army. Following the war, he returned to complete his education, earning a Bachelor of Science in education in 1946.
Berger's career was deeply rooted in academia. He served as a professor at Framingham State Teachers College from 1946 to 1957, teaching subjects such as art appreciation, interior design, costume design, crafts, and introduction to art. In 1949, he attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1950. He later joined the faculty at the Massachusetts School of Art, where he taught painting and illustration until his death.
