Early Years and Artistic Formation
Aguilar’s artistic journey began in Barcelona where he studied at the Escola Massana and the Conservatori de les Arts del Libro between 1962 and 1967. These formative years exposed him to influential movements like Surrealism and Minimalism, profoundly shaping his aesthetic sensibilities. Notably, a trip to Paris in 1965 ignited his fascination with Constantin Brancusi, Julio González, and the Russian constructivists—artists whose sculptural explorations championed experimentation and new ideas on space. He belongs to a generation of Spanish artists born following the Civil War who would be responsible for initiating the break from previous conceptions of sculpture and ushering in the experimentation and new ideas on space which were taking place in Europe and the United States.
