Xavier Valls (1923 – 2006): A Painter’s Quiet Reverie

Born in Barcelona on September 18th, 1923, Xavier Valls subirà emerged as a painter deeply rooted in Catalan culture yet profoundly shaped by Parisian artistic currents. His formative years were marked by exposure to influential sculptors like Charles Collet and painters such as Jaume Busquets during the vibrant cultural exchange between Spain and Switzerland of the 1930s—a period that instilled within him an unwavering appreciation for visual art principles, laying the groundwork for his distinctive oeuvre. His artistic education extended beyond individual mentorship; Valls’ sensibilities flourished through collaborations with esteemed architects – Luís Bonet Garí, Isidre Puig Boada, and Francesc Folguera i Grassi – alongside designer Santiago Marco. Notably, he established the Cercle Maillol at the French Institute of Barcelona in 1946 alongside Collet, Suzanne Alemany, Alfred Figueras, and Bernard Sanjuan—a pivotal moment that propelled him toward a deeper engagement with European artistic traditions and solidified his stylistic vision. This Parisian residency proved instrumental in honing his craft and fostering intellectual curiosity. By 1953, Valls’ paintings garnered considerable acclaim at the Salon d'automne, establishing him as an ascendant figure within the French avant-garde. He continued to refine his technique through collaborations with Fernand Léger on stained glass designs—a testament to his versatility—and gained recognition within prestigious galleries overseen by Henriette Gomès and Claude Bernard. His dedication was rewarded with the Prix Drouant in 1980, followed by a solo exhibition at the Musée Ingres in Montauban in 1981—a celebration of his artistic accomplishments and bolstering his reputation as a respected practitioner within the art world. The Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid added ‘Pêches et Pichet’ (1974) to its collection, cementing Valls' place among Spain’s most celebrated realist painters. Valls’ artistic style was characterized by an extraordinary attention to detail and a masterful command of color—traits that drew comparisons to Francisco de Zurbarán for their simplicity and expressive power. He favored watercolor and oil paint as mediums, meticulously capturing the nuances of light and shadow to convey profound emotional resonance. His subjects ranged from still lifes depicting fruit arrangements and vases to landscapes portraying serene Catalan vistas—each piece imbued with a contemplative spirit reflecting Valls’ own quiet observation of the natural world. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Xavier Valls maintained strong familial ties, fathering Manuel Valls, who would later become Prime Minister of France – a connection that underscores the enduring legacy of Valls' creative spirit and personal values. He passed away peacefully in Barcelona on August 20th, 2006, leaving behind a rich artistic heritage and a profound contribution to Catalan art history. His final memoir, “La Capsa Meva Pandora,” published in Catalan in 2003, offered an intimate glimpse into his inner world—a testament to Valls’ unwavering commitment to portraying the beauty of everyday life through exquisitely rendered images.
