The Life of Frédéric Peyson
Born in Montpellier, France, Frédéric Peyson was the eldest of five children. His childhood was marked by a significant accident at the age of two and a half, where his head became trapped in the iron bars of a window grate. Following this incident, he suffered from a cerebral fever that caused his hearing to decline, eventually leaving him deaf and unable to speak. He was educated at the Institution des sourds-muets de Paris for ten years before studying at the private boarding school of Auguste Bébian.
Peyson’s artistic training was distinguished by his study at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, where he was a pupil of Antoine-Jean Gros, Léon Cogniet, Ingres, and Louis Hersent. He was a participant in the competitions for the Prix de Rome in 1834, 1835, and 1836, notably finishing in third place in 1834. Throughout his life, he remained an amateur painter, supported by an inheritance from his parents, and he dedicated himself to advocating for the rights and recognition of deaf individuals.
