(22 november)

Born in Lyon, France, Joseph Guichard began his artistic training at the Palais Saint-Pierre, where he studied drawing under Pierre Révoil and Fleury François Richard. Seeking a different path, he later studied with the sculptor Jean-François Legendre-Héral. His time in Paris brought him into the workshop of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, though he eventually moved toward the style of Eugène Delacroix, choosing to paint without preliminary sketches. This approach defined his lifelong practice.
Guichard's career included significant commissions, such as copying works by Daniele da Volterra and Raphaël. He also contributed to the decoration of the Galerie d'Apollon at the Louvre alongside Delacroix. His professional achievements were marked by several roles, including:
As an educator, Guichard held a prominent position at the École des beaux-arts de Lyon, succeeding Michel Philibert Genod. Despite facing professional challenges and a suspension in 1871, he was eventually named Director of the school by Jules Simon. His influence as a teacher extended to several notable students, including:
Guichard spent much of his life in Lyon, where he eventually passed away in 1880.
