The Life and Art of John Dodgson Barrow
Born in New York City, John Dodgson Barrow was a painter whose life was deeply connected to the landscapes of Central New York. After receiving painting lessons in North East England at the age of fifteen, he returned to Skaneateles, New York, to continue his artistic pursuits. His career saw him move to New York City, where he opened a studio in Greenwich Village in 1856. Barrow's work was exhibited at various prestigious venues, including the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Boston Athenæum. Notably, he painted a portrait of Abraham Lincoln in February 1860.
Artistic Focus and Legacy
Barrow's artistic output was divided between commissioned portraits and landscape paintings. His landscapes frequently captured the pastoral life and scenes surrounding Skaneateles Lake, a location where he spent many summers. Beyond the canvas, he was involved in civic life, serving as the president of the Skaneateles Savings Bank and as a director of the Onondaga Historical Association. He also designed the Skaneateles Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and the addition to the village's public library. In 1900, he donated his gallery to the Skaneateles library, which houses a collection of his works in their original gilded frames.
