Early Life and Training

Born in 1470 in Strasbourg, France, Hans Herbst grew up in a household where his future was already being mapped out by his father. The young man, however, felt a pull toward a different life. He chose to pursue the life of a painter, a decision made in defiance of his father's wishes. This tension between familial expectation and personal calling eventually drove him away from his birthplace, sending him into the southern reaches of Germany to find his way.

His formal training began in his homeland, likely within the school of Schongau. It was here that he began to develop the technical skills that would define his career. His early style emerged from a synthesis of Upper Rhine traditions, blending the visual languages of the region into a cohesive way of seeing. These formative years in the workshops of the south provided the foundation for the religious and secular works he would later produce.

Life and Activity in Basel

After spending time traveling through Swabia, Hans Herbst eventually made Basel his home. He integrated himself into the local community by becoming a member of the Zunft Zum Himmel. His life in the city was marked by more than just his studio work; he was a man of his time, even participating in the military campaigns of 1512 at Pavia and 1515 at Marignano.

During his years in Basel, Herbst established himself as a central figure in the local art scene. He was considered the most significant painter in the city before the arrival of Holbein. His presence in the city was deeply felt through his religious works and his involvement in civic life. He moved within influential circles, including acquaintances such as Ambrosius Holbein and Erasmus of Rotterdam.

His professional standing allowed him to secure various important commissions throughout the city. Some of his notable projects included:

  • A painted tabletop for Hans Baer in 1515
  • The main altar for the Maria Magdalena monastery in 1518
  • The facade of the Haus zum Falken in 1523

Key Works and Commissions

During his years in Basel, Herbst secured various commissions that reflected the needs of both private citizens and religious institutions. In 1515, he applied his skill to a tabletop for Hans Baer the Younger, a piece that brought art into the functional, daily life of a local resident. By 1518, his work had moved into the sacred spaces of the city, where he created the main altar for the Maria Magdalena monastery in Basel.

His religious paintings often focused on the central scenes of the Christian faith. One such work, the Crucifixion of Christ, is held in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. This period of his life saw him producing imagery that would define the visual landscape of the region before the religious shifts of the later decades. His ability to handle diverse subjects was evident when he moved from the canvas to architecture, painting the facade of the Haus zum Falken in 1523.

  • Tabletop for Hans Baer the Younger, 1515
  • Crucifixion of Christ, 1515
  • Main altar for the Maria Magdalenenkloster, 1518
  • Facade of the Haus zum Falken, 1523

Later Years and Death

The religious shifts sweeping through the region eventually reached the doorstep of Hans Herbst. Though he held to his original convictions, the changing landscape of Basel left him with little room to maneuver. By 1530, the pressures of the Reformation became impossible to ignore, and he was forced to adopt the new faith. This transition marked a quiet turning point in his life, as the spiritual landscape he had once painted began to fade from public demand.

Following this shift in belief, the steady stream of significant work that had once defined his career began to dry up. The grand religious commissions that had once filled his days were replaced by much smaller, less substantial tasks. He spent his remaining years working on these minor assignments, far removed from the prominence he had once held in the city. He remained in Basel until the end of his life, passing away there on November 10, 1552.
