A Life in Art and Print
Anton Gareis was a German painter, lithographer, and engraver. Born in Klosterfreiheit, Germany, he received his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and in Berlin, later studying in Neustadt/Oberschlesien from 1818. His professional journey included working for the publisher J. D. Gruson in Breslau, where he produced lithographs based on the works of the Galerie von Maria Magdalena and Raphael's Sistine Madonna, as well as mythological subjects of his own invention.
In 1822, Gareis moved to Prague to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he eventually settled. His diverse body of work in Prague encompassed portrait painting, including miniatures on ivory, and the creation of genre scenes, moralizing satires, and caricatures. He was among the first painters in Prague to focus on folk scenes, which he rendered in oil and watercolor.
