On September 27, 1979, Ma, alongside Huang Rui, organized the groundbreaking "Stars Exhibition" outside the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. This audacious act of creative dissent publicly confronted the political system, seeking to express not only democracy and freedom but also a rediscovered sense of beauty that had been suppressed by political upheaval. The exhibition left an indelible mark on the development of contemporary art in China, acting as a catalyst for the "Beijing Spring" movement.
The cost of such bravery was significant. The governmental repression against these “liberal thinkers” eventually forced Ma to relocate to Paris in 1986. This transition marked a profound shift in his life and work. Amidst the vibrant international art scene of Europe, he continued his explorations, refining his style and expanding his thematic concerns. While his early woodblock prints were characterized by their confrontational nature, his later works began to embrace a broader range of media, including ink wash paintings, stone paintings, and even large-scale acrylic canvases.
