Known as “Boca da Noite” (Mouth of Night), Adelina was an enslaved woman, as was her mother. It is said that her father was a slave master, had riches, and promised his daughter that he would set her free when she turned seventeen. The promise was not kept and Adelina remained as an enslaved housemaid. Raised in the house of her master, she studied on her own and learned to read and write. After his impoverishment, Adelina’s father started to manufacture cigars. Adelina sold the cigars she carried on a tray in downtown São Luís. In Largo do Carmo, where she had student clients, she had the opportunity to participate in abolitionist demonstrations. Among legends and memories about her, it is said that the fact that Adelina knew the city streets and the people of the region well was her greatest asset in the political struggle. She was able to anticipate police actions, coordinate the escape of enslaved people and contribute to the maintenance of quilombola villages.

The Architecture of Memory: The Art of Hariel Revignet de Oliveira

Born in the vibrant Brazilian city of Goiânia in 1995, Hariel Revignet de Oliveira has emerged as a profound voice in contemporary art, crafting a visual language that exists at the delicate intersection of structural precision and ancestral storytelling. Her practice is not merely an aesthetic pursuit but a deep, investigative journey into how urban landscapes hold the echoes of those who inhabited them before us. Trained as an architect and urbanist, Oliveira possesses a unique ability to apply the meticulous eye of a designer to the fluid, often intangible realms of identity and memory. Where others might see only buildings and streets, she perceives layers of history, seeing the city as a living archive of resistance, resilience, and cultural heritage.

The foundation of her work is deeply rooted in the textures of Brazilian folklore and the powerful narratives of indigenous and Afro-Brazilian traditions. She draws significant inspiration from the histories of quilombos—communities established by escaped enslaved people—most notably the legendary Quilombo dos Palmares. This fascination with the preservation of ancestral knowledge informs much of her thematic depth, as she seeks to bridge the gap between the rigid geometry of modern urbanism and the spiritual, often suppressed, legacies of the past. Her art serves as a vessel for voices that have been historically marginalized, transforming historical figures into icons of enduring strength.

Technique and the Poetics of Layering

To encounter an Oliveira piece is to enter a space of quiet contemplation. Her technical approach is characterized by a deliberate, slow-paced mastery that mirrors the careful observation required in architectural analysis. Eschewing the loud and the frenetic, she often employs gouache and china-ink on paper, utilizing muted palettes and layered textures to create depth. Each brushstroke is an intentional act of excavation, pulling subtle nuances of light and shadow from the surface to evoke a sense of time passing.

This method allows her to create images that possess a haunting, atmospheric quality. The resulting works are not mere illustrations of history but are instead sensory experiences where the visual surface invites the viewer to look deeper into the emotional resonance beneath. Through the interplay of ink and pigment, she captures the weight of the past, making the ephemeral nature of memory feel tangible and permanent.

Narratives of Resistance and Social Significance

The true power of Oliveira’s oeuvre lies in her ability to personify history through evocative portraiture and narrative scenes. Her work often centers on figures who stood at the crossroads of struggle and triumph, turning historical accounts into poignant visual meditations. Some of her most striking thematic explorations include:

  • Prata Preta: A tribute to Horácio José da Silva, a dockworker and capoeirista who became a symbol of bravery during the Vaccine Revolt in Rio de Janeiro, representing the spirit of urban uprising.
  • Adelina: An exploration of the life of an enslaved woman known as "Boca da Noite," whose literacy and knowledge of the city streets made her a vital participant in abolitionist struggles.
  • Iaiá de Ouro: A depiction of Feliciana Maria Olímpia, a free Black woman in Recife whose spiritual influence and healing practices connected diverse urban communities through religious tradition.
  • Félix: A narrative focusing on Félix José Rodrigues, a quilombola fighter whose journey through the Paraguayan War led to the establishment of new Black villages in the Brazilian hinterland.

Through these subjects, Oliveira confronts societal injustices and celebrates the profound impact of marginalized individuals on the fabric of Brazilian society. Her work does more than document; it rehabilitates history, ensuring that the legacies of resistance are woven into the contemporary consciousness. As a nominee for the prestigious PIPA Prize, her rising significance in the global art scene marks her as an artist who is not only redefining the boundaries between architecture and fine art but also acting as a vital custodian of cultural memory.
