Descripción de la obra

A young woman at the window with a concentrated gaze is the central figure of this painted table executed by Giarrizzo who emphasises the suspended atmosphere in which she is immersed by employing neat silhouettes and wide colour spreads. The overlapping of the framing and the window enhances the effect of the ‘painting inside the painting’ with a strong visual impact. By purchasing the painting, the Gallery of Modern Art provided a sort of official recognition of the painter from Palermo who witnessed an increase in the number of exhibitions throughout Italy.

Biografía del artista

Manlio Gianrizzo (1896-1957): A Sicilian Visionary Bridging Tradition and Modernity

Born in Palermo, Italy, Manlio Gianrizzo descended from a family deeply connected to Sicilian traditions—a heritage that profoundly shaped his artistic sensibilities. His formative years instilled within him an unwavering appreciation for both the timeless beauty of classical art forms and the invigorating spirit of experimentation prevalent during the early 20th century. Recognizing the importance of formal training, he commenced his artistic journey at the Accademia del Nudo in Palermo, where he benefited from the guidance of influential artists who championed the ideals of Renaissance art—figures whose profound impact on artistic expression he diligently studied and internalized. Gianrizzo’s artistic reputation rests primarily upon his breathtaking landscape paintings, particularly those capturing the evocative essence of the Sicilian countryside. These canvases are characterized by meticulous detail and a masterful command of color palettes that convey not merely visual representation but also palpable emotion. Simultaneously, he produced striking portraits—works imbued with remarkable sensitivity—that succeeded in encapsulating the very soul of their subjects. His artistic vision drew considerable inspiration from masters such as Raphael and Fra Angelico, artists who epitomized Renaissance grandeur and humanist ideals. However, Gianrizzo’s genius transcended mere imitation; he skillfully integrated innovative techniques into his oeuvre—primarily oil on wood—resulting in a distinctive stylistic blend that distinguished him from many of his contemporaries. This fusion reflected a broader movement within Italian art during his lifetime, embracing modern sensibilities while steadfastly upholding core aesthetic values. His artistic accomplishments garnered considerable acclaim through exhibitions held across Italy, notably at the Museo Civico di San Gimignano, showcasing a diverse collection of masterpieces spanning centuries. Museums like the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome proudly display Gianrizzo’s paintings alongside works by other prominent artists of his era—including Guglielmo Ciardi, Odoardo Borrani, and Alfonso Balzico—further solidifying his place within the rich tapestry of Italian art history. These exhibitions served as crucial platforms for disseminating his artistic vision to a wider audience and establishing him as a respected voice within the intellectual circles of his time. Gianrizzo’s legacy extends far beyond individual artworks; he stands as a pivotal figure in shaping the trajectory of 20th-century Italian artistic discourse. He championed a stylistic approach that prioritized emotional resonance alongside meticulous craftsmanship, contributing significantly to the development of landscape painting and portraiture as expressive mediums. His unwavering dedication to preserving traditional techniques while embracing modern innovations cemented his position as a true innovator—a testament to his enduring contribution to the artistic heritage of Sicily and Italy.
