Early Life and Artistic Training

Theodor Hosemann was born on 24 September 1807 in Brandenburg an der Havel. He grew up as the son of an officer in the Prussian Army. His early years involved moving frequently, following the requirements of his father's military service. By the age of twelve, his path moved toward the technical precision of the lithography firm of Arnz & Winckelmann in Düsseldorf, where he began an apprenticeship.

His professional life moved quickly. By 1815, he was already working as a draftsman, earning a salary of 200 Thalers annually. While he held this position, he also attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy to refine his skills. These early years shaped him into a draftsman, painter, illustrator, and caricaturist.

Career in Berlin and Illustration

In 1828, Hosemann moved to Berlin to serve as Chief Illustrator for Winckelmann and Sons, a position that doubled his previous salary. By 1830, his humorous drawings had gained a steady following. He spent much of his time working with publishers, providing the visual details for many books and periodicals. Between 1834 and 1852, he maintained a long collaboration with the satirist Adolf Glassbrenner. This partnership produced the 32-book series titled Berlin wie es ist und – trinkt.

His social and professional life was tied to the literary circles of the city. From 1842 to 1855, he was a member of the Tunnel über der Spree literary society. Within that group, he was known by the name "Hogarth." His work during these years captured the daily life and character of the Prussian capital through lithography, woodcuts, and chalk drawings.
