The Life and Family of Ernst Küsel

Ernst Nikolaus Küsel was born on 31 May 1873 in Nacka, Sweden. He grew up in a family with deep roots in the region, being the son of Robert Herman Küsel and Emilia Augusta Küsel. His family connections were closely knit, extending through his brother, Emil Herman Küsel, who was married to Helfrid Vilhelmina Ditzinger. These familial ties would eventually intersect with Ernst's own personal life through marriage.

In 1904, Ernst Küsel married Ingrid Margareta Ditzinger. This union linked the Küsel and Ditzinger families, as Ingrid's sister, Helfrid, was already married to Ernst's brother. The family's creative legacy continued through the next generation; Ernst was the uncle of the artist and professor Olle Nyman. He remained connected to his home region throughout his life, eventually passing away in Nacka on 16 November 1942.

Artistic Focus and Notable Works

Küsel found his calling in the quiet, steady lives of animals. He trained as a painter with a specific devotion to the creatures of the field, focusing his gaze on calves, sheep, and other four-legged animals. Rather than posing them in a studio, he preferred to capture them in the wild, observing how they moved and rested in their natural surroundings. This connection to the animal kingdom gave his work a grounded, honest quality that reflected the reality of rural life.

His early years saw him developing this specialized skill, with his work He-Goat appearing around 1900. As his career progressed, he continued to document the simple presence of livestock. In 1906, he produced Cows in the Woods and Gazing Sheep, works that captured the stillness of animals in their environment. By 1920, his output remained steady, focusing on the essential forms of the animals he knew so well, including Cow, Goats, and Horse.
