The Life and Artistic Journey of Charles Wheeler

Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, Charles Wheeler moved to Australia with his mother at the age of ten, eventually settling in Williamstown. His professional path began with an apprenticeship as a lithographer, but his passion for fine art led him to study at the Working Men's College and later at the National Gallery schools. Under the guidance of Frederick McCubbin and L. Bernard Hall, he developed the skills that would define his career. Wheeler famously abandoned his lithographic career to dedicate himself entirely to painting, a decision he viewed as essential to truly living.

His professional recognition grew through exhibitions with the Victorian Artists' Society and the Australian Art Association. His talent was further recognized when the Art Gallery of New South Wales purchased The Portfolio and the National Gallery of Victoria added The Poem to its collection. In 1933, he achieved the distinction of winning the Archibald Prize.

War, Teaching, and Artistic Ethos

Wheeler's life was marked by significant service during World War I, where he enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. For his actions at Vimy Ridge, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. His work Beauty and Beastliness captured the intense contrast of the natural scene against the slaughter of the conflict in Delville Wood in 1916. Upon returning to Australia, he became a highly active exhibitor and a dedicated educator. He taught at the Melbourne Technical College and later served as a drawing instructor and master of the painting school at the National Gallery School.

As an artist, Wheeler held a conservative outlook and was unconvinced by Modernism. While he acknowledged the talent of artists like Picasso, he believed that viewers desired more than just interesting patterns or colors found in abstract works. His dedication to the primacy of good drawing remained a cornerstone of his artistic philosophy throughout his life.
