A Classical Landscape

Bourdon was one of Nicolas Poussin’s most ardent early followers, and he often went to great lengths to display familiarity with the classical references Poussin had pioneered for painting. In this rigorously structured landscape, Bourdon quoted ancient and contemporary works of classical art: the large statue of a horse at the left directly cites a statue found on Rome’s Quirinal Hill, while the group of dancers at the right comes from Poussin’s Bacchanal (ca. 1632–33; National Gallery, London).
