A Repose after Shooting

  • Creation date1770
  • Dimensions102.0 x 128.0 cm
A sense of satisfaction emanates from this scene, set in the twilight of a fruitful day of hunting. One gentleman rests “sated with sport” in a darkening wood, while the other adds a hare to their catch. Piled at the foot of a large oak tree, the bag includes birds of the field and woodland’s edge – colorful pheasant and pale-bellied partridge – and migratory wading birds – long-billed snipe and woodcock. The magnificent, closely-observed canopy of trees provides contrast with the three more open views. A distant view of Creswell Crags sets the background.
