          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Jessie MacGregor was born in Liverpool to a Scottish father, Alexander, and a mother, Sarah. She grew up in a large household, sharing a home with an older brother and seven younger siblings. Her early years were shaped by the steady presence of her grandfather, Andrew Hunt, a landscape painter who ran a drawing academy in Liverpool. It was here that Jessie MacGregor first learned the fundamentals of drawing, picking up the tools and techniques under his guidance.

While her grandfather provided the foundation for her drawing, her mother introduced her to the softer textures of watercolours. These early lessons in Liverpool formed the basis of her technical skill before she moved toward more formal study. By 1870, she had made her way to London to begin a seven-year period of study at the Royal Academy Schools.

          Training and Academic Success

Her formal training took place within the walls of the Royal Academy Schools, where she studied for seven years. Under the guidance of Lord Leighton, P. H. Calderon, R.A., and John Pettie, R.A., she refined her approach to the canvas. By 1871, she was already exhibiting her work at the Royal Academy, marking the beginning of a long presence at the institution.

In December 1871, she achieved a significant recognition when she won a gold medal for history painting. The subject required for the award was An Act of Mercy. This achievement made her the second woman to receive such a distinction, following Louisa Starr in 1867. Her success at the Academy was notable for its longevity; she remained the last woman to secure a gold medal of this kind until 1909.

          Professional Career and Exhibitions

Her presence in the exhibition halls was steady and persistent. She began showing her work at the Royal Academy in 1871, even while still a student. This was the start of a long habit of exhibiting that lasted for forty years, continuing through 1913. Her name appeared frequently in the catalogs of the Society of Female Artists and in various exhibitions across Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow.

In 1874, she was named an Academician for the Liverpool Academy of Art. Her reach extended beyond the United Kingdom, reaching across the Atlantic to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. There, her work was displayed at the Palace of Fine Arts. She maintained a consistent presence in the art world, moving between different studios in London as her career progressed.

          Key Works and Subject Matter

Her brush often settled on the quiet presence of women and children. In 1892, she produced In the Childhood of Dante, a work noted for its fresh depiction of Italian childhood. This piece shows Beatrice kneeling on the grass, holding flowers and looking up at Dante as he stands beside her. Around them, other children and maids dance, set against a Florentine garden with arched structures and a summer sky. She also turned her attention to historical and narrative themes, such as In the Reign of Terror (1891), which is held in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. This work followed her interest in history painting, a genre she explored through various subjects.

Portraiture and commissioned works formed a significant part of her output. The Corporation of Liverpool commissioned her to paint Jephthah in 1889. Her portraits often captured specific individuals, including Mamie, daughter of W Parker Esq and Miss Henderson in 1890, as well as Miss Phyllis Eden in 1892. Earlier, in 1883, she painted Amber. These works show a consistent focus on the human figure and the specific details of their presence.

          Later Years and Death

The later decades of her life saw a change in her surroundings as she moved through different London neighborhoods. In 1888, she established her studio at Hill Road in St John's Wood. By 1900, her residence and workspace had shifted again, this time to Chalcot Gardens in Hampstead.

She remained active in the art community, contributing to the Lyceum Club in London as a committee member in 1904. Her presence was also felt through her lectures for the Victorian University extension scheme, where she spoke at the Arts Clubs of Liverpool, the National Gallery, and Leighton House museum.

She died in 1919 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. She was 71–72 years old at the time of her death.
