          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Born in 1806 in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, James Duncan began his life in a landscape that would eventually serve as the backdrop for his professional development. He received his artistic training in Ireland, cultivating the foundational skills that would later define his career as a painter and lithographer. Though the specific circumstances of his departure from his homeland remain unclear, he emigrated to Lower Canada in 1825, seeking new opportunities in a developing colony.

His transition to North American life was marked by the establishment of a permanent home and family. In 1834, he married Caroline Benedict Power, a native of Sorel. Their union provided a sense of stability as he navigated the complexities of a new society. Together, they raised a large family consisting of four boys and three girls, anchoring his presence in the region for the decades that followed.

          Life and Activity in Montreal

Upon his arrival in the colony, Duncan established himself as a fixture of the local landscape. By 1830, he was already recognized throughout Montreal as both an artist and a teacher of drawing. He holds the distinction of being the first British artist to settle permanently in the city, a move that anchored his professional life in the growing urban center. His presence in the community was marked by a steady, industrious commitment to his craft and his students.

His domestic life was centered in the heart of the city, where he resided for several decades. Between 1842 and 1879, his residence was located on either Champ de Mars Street or St. Louis Street, situated between Sanguinet and Bonsecours. As his professional needs evolved, he sought more dedicated space for his work, renting a studio at 126 Notre-Dame Street during the years 1858–1859. This period of his life reflected a man deeply integrated into the social and physical fabric of Montreal.

Duncan was also a foundational figure in the city's organized art community. In 1847, he became a founding member of the Montreal Society of Artists, helping to provide a formal structure for local creators. His involvement in such institutions helped shape the early cultural institutions of the region. He remained an active participant in the local scene, exhibiting his work in various provincial and city exhibitions for many years.

          Patrons, Workshop and Commissions

Duncan’s professional life in Montreal was deeply intertwined with the civic leadership of the era. He became a favorite artist of Montreal Mayor Jacques Viger, a relationship that provided a steady stream of significant subject matter. This connection began early, with Viger commissioning a series of Montreal views in 1831. As their professional acquaintance matured, the nature of these commissions shifted from topographical landscapes to more personal studies. Between 1839 and 1845, Viger sought Duncan’s skill for various portraits, and the artist returned to provide illustrations for the Mayor in 1845 and 1853.

Beyond his private commissions, Duncan’s technical expertise led him into the commercial sphere of printmaking. In 1864, he became a member of Duncan and Company, a firm specializing in lithography, engraving, and drawing. This venture allowed him to apply his drafting skills to the burgeoning needs of the city's publishing and printing industries. His ability to translate sketches into reproducible formats ensured his presence in the visual record of Montreal long after the initial drawing was made.

          Key Works and Publications

Duncan’s hand was instrumental in documenting the evolving landscape of Montreal through several significant publications. In 1839, he provided the drawings for Hochelaga Devicta: The Early History and Present State of the City and Island of Montréal, a work that sought to capture the essence of the burgeoning settlement. His ability to translate the physical reality of the city into print helped define the visual record of the era.

The artist achieved a technical milestone in the mid-1840s through his work with lithography. Between 1843 and 1844, he produced a series of six Montreal views as lithographs. These specific prints hold a place in Canadian history as the first tint-stone lithographs published in the country. His precision in these works allowed for a level of detail that captured the atmospheric textures of the urban environment.

Beyond his topographical views and illustrations, Duncan applied his drafting skills to more functional and decorative endeavors. He was tasked with creating intricate designs for coinage and ornamental printing, demonstrating a versatility that extended from large-scale cityscapes to the minute details of metal and paper. His output during this period reflects a man deeply integrated into the commercial and civic life of his adopted home.

          Technique and Style

Duncan was a prolific watercolorist whose hand was most at home when recording the shifting life of the city. His landscapes and street scenes were characterized by a subtle range of colours, used to capture specific atmospheric and textural effects. He possessed the eye of a draftsman, capable of producing quick, on-the-spot sketches of figures and groups in motion. These studies of people in action reveal a technical facility that extended far beyond mere observation.

While his watercolors often held the most fluidity, his technical interests were remarkably broad. He moved between the delicate precision of drawing and the more industrial applications of printmaking. His repertoire included oil painting, etchings, and wood engravings. He was also a pioneer in the local use of lithography, specifically through the production of tint-stone lithographs. In his later years, he even embraced the emerging medium of photography, demonstrating a persistent curiosity for the various ways an image might be captured and preserved.

          Later Years and Death

The final years of Duncan's life were marked by a continued presence within the institutional fabric of Montreal. In 1837, he served as a 1st lieutenant in the Montréal Light Infantry, a period of civic engagement that coincided with his established role as a teacher and professional artist. His professional standing remained steady as he navigated the evolving artistic landscape of Quebec, maintaining his connection to the various societies he helped foster.

Recognition of his long career arrived in his final year. In 1881, he was named an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. This distinction arrived just before his passing in Montreal, Quebec. He died on September 28, 1881, at the age of 74–75. His life had spanned the transition from the early colonial era to a more settled, modernizing society, leaving behind a visual record of a city in flux.
