          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Jacob Ennis was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1728. He was the son of James and Margaret Ennis, and his arrival in the city was marked by his baptism at St Peter's church on 29 February 1728. From a young age, his path seemed directed toward the visual arts, a pursuit nurtured within the structured environment of the Dublin Society school of drawing at George's Lane.

It was at this institution that Ennis began his formal training under the guidance of Robert West. His development as a student was marked by consistent recognition; he received premiums in 1747, 1748, and 1750. These early successes signaled the emergence of a painter who would eventually find his niche in historical and portrait subjects.

          Artistic Studies in Italy

Under the patronage of Arthur Jones Nevill, Ennis traveled to Italy to further his training. He arrived in Rome in late January 1754, finding lodgings alongside fellow artists James Forrester and Robert Crone. This period of immersion in the Italian tradition allowed him to study from both live models and antique statuary, a practice that would inform his later historical compositions.

His technical proficiency was recognized early by the Roman academies. In November 1754, he was awarded the seventh prize for painting at the Accademia di San Luca’s triennial competition. This success was followed by further accolades at the Accademia del Nudo, where he studied under the instruction of Anton Raphael Mengs and Pompeo Batoni. In 1755 and 1756, he secured third prize in the Concorso Nudo. These years of rigorous study were punctuated by a visit to Florence, broadening his understanding of the classical style before his eventual return to Ireland.

          Career in Dublin and Commissions

Upon his return to Ireland, Ennis established himself through a series of significant decorative and portrait commissions. One of his most notable undertakings involved the decoration of the home of Arthur Jones Nevill at 14 Rutland Square, Dublin. There, he executed a set of four lunettes for a drawing-room ceiling, featuring figures such as Bacchus, Venus, Diana, and Mercury. While the full set once adorned the coving of the house, three of these paintings are now preserved within the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

His professional standing in the city was further solidified through his leadership in art education. On 10 May 1763, he was appointed to succeed Robert West as the master of the school of figure drawing at Shaw's Court, Dublin. This position allowed him to influence the next generation of Irish artists while he continued to exhibit his own work. Between 1765 and 1770, he was a regular presence in the annual exhibitions of the Society of Artists, presenting both classical subjects and portraits.

The Dublin Society recognized his technical skill with several prestigious awards. In June 1768, he was granted a premium for the best original history piece painted in oil colours. His success continued into the following decade; in June 1770, he shared another award with Henry Tresham. These honors reflected a career defined by a steady command of both historical composition and the nuances of portraiture.

          Later Years and Death

The final decade of Ennis's life was marked by a consistent presence within the Dublin art scene. He became a regular exhibitor with the Society of Artists, contributing works that explored both classical and dramatic themes. In 1765, he presented The Death of Corasus, followed a year later by Daedalus and Icarus in 1766. These exhibitions helped solidify his reputation as a painter capable of handling complex historical narratives alongside his portraiture.

His professional obligations continued until the very end of his life. As the master of the Dublin Society's Drawing School, he maintained his position at Shaw's Court, a role he had held since 1763. The administrative and instructional aspects of his career reached a sudden conclusion in the summer of 1770. On 9 August 1770, Ennis received his final payment for his services as a drawing master.

His life was cut short shortly thereafter by a sudden accident. While in the county of Wicklow, he died following a fall from his horse. He was only in his early forties when this event occurred, leaving behind a body of work that spanned the transition from academic study in Italy to the established art circles of Ireland.
