The Life and Career of Daniel Dodd

Daniel Dodd worked as an English painter and engraver during the middle of the eighteenth century. His presence in the London art scene became established through his membership in the Free Society of Artists. He first appeared as an exhibitor at Spring Gardens in 1761, a venue where he continued to show his work until 1780. His professional activity spanned from 1752 until around 1780.

His life was tied to the shifting spaces of the era, moving from Old Ford, near Bow, into the heart of London. This movement mirrored the changing nature of his output, as he navigated the demands of portraiture and the technical requirements of engraving. He was part of a family of artists; his son, D. P. Dodd, and his daughter both exhibited with the Free Society of Artists starting in 1768.

          Early Life and Professional Training

Dodd’s early years were spent in the vicinity of Old Ford, near Bow. This was his first residence before he eventually moved into the heart of London. His presence in the city coincided with his emergence as an exhibitor at Spring Gardens, where he first appeared in 1761. He remained a regular contributor to these exhibitions through 1780, establishing a steady presence in the local art scene.

The training he received helped shape his ability to work across different mediums. Thomas Day, a miniature painter, is said to have been his pupil. This connection likely influenced the small-scale precision seen in much of his later work. The artist's professional life was also a family affair; both his son, D. P. Dodd, and his daughter were artists who exhibited alongside him within the Free Society of Artists from 1768.

          Technique and Artistic Style

Dodd worked most often with crayons, focusing his attention on portraits rendered in a small scale. These intimate drawings suggest a hand accustomed to working closely with the subject. While his crayon work was his primary mode, he also applied oil to canvas for larger compositions. His approach to portraiture allowed him to capture the likeness of individuals through these varied textures, moving between the soft touch of dry media and the weight of oil paint.

Beyond individual likenesses, he had a knack for capturing movement and social density. He drew scenes of fashionable life that were crowded with figures, filling the space with the presence of many people. This ability to manage large groups of people translated well to his work as an illustrator. He provided designs for the Novelist's Magazine by Harrison & Co. and created illustrations for George Frederick Raymond's History of England.

          Notable Engravings and Commissions

Dodd’s hand moved between the soft texture of crayons and the sharp precision of the engraver’s tool. He spent much of his time translating scenes of public life into prints, capturing the movement of crowds and the stillness of formal gatherings. His work often appeared in publications, such as the illustrations he designed for George Frederick Raymond's History of England and the Novelist's Magazine published by Harrison & Co. These commissions required a steady eye for detail to manage the many figures moving through a single composition.

He was particularly drawn to the energy of social and civic events. He produced engravings of the Royal Procession to St. Paul's and a view of the Exhibition of the Royal Academy at Somerset House. His plates also captured the atmosphere of high-society gatherings, including a view of the Ball at St. James's on Her Majesty's Birthnight. In other instances, he focused on the spectacle of art itself, such as his engraving of the exhibition of Copley's picture of the Death of Lord Chatham.

Beyond these large-scale scenes, Dodd worked on intimate portraits through the mezzotint process. He engraved a portrait of the pugilist "Buckhorse" himself, using the technique to capture the man's likeness. He also applied his skills to other portraits, including an engraving of Richard Leveridge based on a work by Thomas Frye.

          Key Works and Portraiture

Dodd’s hand often found its way to the faces of specific individuals, capturing them in small-scale crayons or through the weight of oil on canvas. His portraiture included Margaret Caroline Rudd and Nathan Potts of the Robin Hood Society. In the case of Nathan Potts, the likeness was further translated into a mezzotint by Butler Clowes. He also turned his attention to the pugilist known as "Buckhorse," a subject he chose to paint and later engrave himself in mezzotint.

One of his larger-scale works is the oil painting on canvas titled Samuel Sketchley and Family. Measuring 1534 x 1419 mm, this piece shows Samuel Sketchley leaning against a sofa with his wife, Elizabeth, while their four sons are positioned around them. The family members are gathered in a way that suggests a quiet, domestic arrangement. This work, dated about 1780, remains part of the Peckover House and Garden collection in Wisbech.
