A Life of Sacred Art
Willy Oeser was a German painter and glass artist. Born in Mannheim, Germany, he was the son of Max Oeser, the director of the Mannheim Palace Library. Although he earned a doctorate in philosophy, Oeser was largely a self-taught practitioner in his artistic endeavors. His work was deeply rooted in religious themes, and following the First World War, he was considered among the innovators of religious art in Germany.
During the era of National Socialism, his creative output faced significant challenges. His works were classified as "degenerate" by the regime; specifically, in 1937, seven of his paintings were confiscated from the Municipal Collection of Freiburg im Breisgau and the Mannheim City Art Gallery to be featured in the "Degenerate Art" exhibition. Some of his notable works from this period, such as Resurrection of Lazarus, Angel, Italian Landscape, and Madonna with Child, were part of this movement.
Legacy and Religious Works
In the years following the Second World War, Oeser focused his talents on the design and creation of numerous mosaics, frescoes, and stained glass windows. His contributions were primarily found in churches throughout the southwest German region. His religious imagery has been featured in various locations, including:
Beyond his visual art, Oeser engaged in scholarly writing, including works on the Desbillons Library and reflections on the restoration of the Lower Parish Church in Mannheim. His art has been made accessible to the public through the Berlin National Gallery and the Mannheim Art Hall.
