Early Life and Professional Beginnings

Willem Gillisz Kool was born in Haarlem in 1608. The city provided the backdrop for his early years and his eventual establishment as a painter during the Dutch Golden Age. His life in Haarlem was marked by the formal structures of the local community, including the professional requirements of his craft.

In 1638, he took a significant step in his professional life by entering the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. This membership allowed him to practice his art within the regulated circles of the city. That same year, his personal life also saw a major change. On 17 januari 1638, he married Cornelia van der Molen. She was the daughter of Jan Gerritsen van der Molen, connecting him to a local family through this union.

These early years in Haarlem established the foundation for his career. He remained tied to the city throughout his life, eventually passing away there in 1666. His presence in the guild and his marriage during the same year suggest a period of settling into his role as a professional artist within the Dutch Republic.

Artistic Focus and Key Works

Kool focused his attention on the landscapes of the Netherlands. His brush captured the quietude of the countryside and the movement of the water. In a work from about 1644, he depicted a fortified town situated beside a frozen river. This scene shows the stillness of a winter landscape where the ice dictates the pace of life. He moved between these quiet, terrestrial views and the more restless energy of the coast.

The sea became a recurring subject in his later years. Around 1655, he painted a seascape near Egmond aan Zee, focusing on the interaction between the water and the shoreline. He continued this interest in maritime views, producing a painting of the sea coast near Scheveningen about 1658. These works show a steady interest in how the light and the tides shape the Dutch horizon. His paintings remain in collections such as the National Museum in Warsaw and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
