A Life Shaped by Moscow and Paris

Victor Karlovich Stember was born in Moscow on January 28, 1863. His early years were spent in the Sokolniki suburb, where the nearby forests left a mark on his eye for landscapes. He studied at the Lutheran Church of Saint Michael technical school before moving to the Imperial Academy of Arts. While he initially trained in architecture, his focus shifted toward painting. This change led him to Paris in 1885, where he joined the Atelier de Robert Fleury. It was here that a specific French elegance began to settle into his brushwork.

In Paris, his life intertwined with Nadia Georgievskaya, an opera singer. They met at a boarding house on Rue Victor Hugo near the Bois de Boulogne. After a period of living in Nice, they married in 1888 and eventually returned to Russia. Their family grew to include five children: Ksenia, Natasha, Kolya, Nadia, and Sonya.

The Brush and the Subject

His work often moved between the formal requirements of the academic salon and a more personal, watercolor-based approach. He captured many faces of the era, from the Russian royalty like Tsarevich Prince Nicholas and Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrov Alexandrovna Romanoff to figures of the revolution. His subjects included:

  • Portraits of Anna Pavlova
  • The Count Sheremetev
  • Prince Yusupov
  • Portraits of V. I. Lenin and other party members
  • Landscapes and costume compositions
  • Female nudes

In the mid-1910s, he worked on a mural for the Marble room of the Serednikovo manor, depicting a devil and an angel carrying the soul of Tamara. His technique relied heavily on watercolor and the academic style he refined in France.

Later Years and Legacy

As political tides shifted, so did his location and subject matter. Following the October revolution, his portraits turned toward revolutionaries and party members. He lived in Moscow, then Petrograd, and finally moved to Nakhichevan in 1920. He died in Vladikavkaz on January 11, 1921, at the age of 58. His remains rest in a military cemetery in Nakhichevan, Russia.

His paintings remain held in several permanent collections, including:
