Tarcila Beroszi: Exploring Memory and Perception Through Photography

Tari Beroszi (b. 1981) is a Puerto Rican artist whose work delves into profound themes of memory, identity, and the relationship between observation and representation—primarily through the medium of photography and installation art. Born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, her artistic journey began early, fostering a lifelong fascination with visual storytelling and capturing fleeting moments that resonate with deeper meaning.

Early Education and Artistic Foundations

From the age of eleven, Beroszi pursued formal artistic training at the Escuela Central de Artes Visuales in Santurce, specializing in drawing. This foundational experience instilled in her a meticulous attention to detail and an understanding of visual composition—skills that would prove invaluable throughout her subsequent academic pursuits. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication with a concentration in Photography from the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus in 2003, marking the beginning of her professional artistic trajectory.

Formal Training and Influences

Continuing her education, Beroszi pursued a Master's Degree in Photography at Spéos Paris École de Photographie in 2005, where she studied under Georges Fèvre, personal printer to Henri Cartier-Bresson—a legendary figure whose humanist approach to photography profoundly influenced Beroszi’s artistic vision. This mentorship instilled in her the importance of capturing authentic human experience and conveying emotion through visual imagery. Further honing her craft at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, Georgia, she obtained an MFA in Photography in 2010.

Recent Achievements and Recognition

Beroszi’s artistic explorations have garnered significant acclaim and recognition. Notably, she was awarded the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2020—a testament to her dedication and talent—and has been invited as a guest speaker at institutions such as Universidad de Salamanca, LCI Monterrey School of Art & Design in Mexico, Parsons School of Design in New York City. Her exhibitions span across continents, showcasing her distinctive style and captivating viewers with evocative imagery that invites contemplation.

Current Artistic Practice

Currently residing in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Beroszi continues to teach Fine Arts at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, nurturing the creative spirit of aspiring artists while simultaneously engaging in her own artistic endeavors. Her photographic work is characterized by a subtle yet powerful technique—suggesting and capturing what’s missing—aiming to reveal or imprint a reflection of memory. She seeks to explore the complexities of perception and how visual representations shape our understanding of the world around us, solidifying her position as a compelling voice within contemporary art.
