The Ming Dynasty Brush

The Ming dynasty provides the backdrop for the life of Sun Zhi, a painter active during a period of profound cultural shifts in China. His work emerges from a tradition where the brushstroke carries the weight of the artist's immediate intent. In the quietude of his compositions, one finds the essence of the scholar-amateur tradition, where painting functions as an extension of the internal spirit rather than a mere imitation of the physical world.

His hand moves across the silk and paper with a specific purpose. The ink settles into the fibers, capturing moments of natural life. His output remains a focused window into the aesthetic priorities of his era, emphasizing the subtle nuances of the natural landscape and the small, living details of the environment.
