The Life and Art of Peter Ferdinand Deurer
Born in Mannheim, Germany, Peter Ferdinand Deurer was a painter specializing in portraiture and history painting. His early training was guided by Johann Christian von Mannlich, the court painter and gallery director. During a period when the French occupied Mannheim, Deurer played a significant role in the secret transfer of the Zweybrücken painting collection to Munich, a collection that eventually served as the foundation for the Alte Pinakothek. After completing his studies at the academies in Düsseldorf and Kassel, he was appointed inspector of the royal painting collection in Augsburg in 1811.
Deurer gained significant recognition as a portraitist, notably for his life-sized portrait of King Maximilian I of Bavaria in coronation robes. His technical skill was characterized by a mastery of color and technique, developed through the deep study of the Old Masters, particularly Raphael. His work included several copies of Raphael's masterpieces, such as a copy of the Burial of Christ. In 1826, he moved from Augsburg to Rome, where he continued to produce drawings of figures and landscapes. He died in Kissingen at the age of 67.
