Early Life, Family and Training

Louis-Auguste Schwiter was born in 1805 near Hanover, Germany. He was the only son of Henry César Auguste Schwiter, a French general. This lineage provided a background of nobility, though his own path would eventually lead toward the brush rather than the battlefield. He spent his early years shaped by this aristocratic setting, moving through a life that would eventually see him known as Baron de Schwiter.

Between 1823 and 1826, he lived in Paris to study law. The legal texts and formal studies of those years were interrupted by a different kind of instruction. During this period, he met Eugène Delacroix, who became his first art teacher. This mentorship shifted his focus from the logic of law to the observation of light and form. The influence of this early training stayed with him as he moved toward a life dedicated to capturing portraits and landscapes.

Professional Career and Exhibitions

His presence in the Parisian art scene was marked by a steady showing at the Salons, where his work appeared between 1831 and 1859. These exhibitions allowed him to present his portraits and landscapes to a wider audience. In 1845, his technical skill was recognized with a gold medal. This period of his life was defined by a consistent engagement with the formal structures of the French art establishment.

Travel took him across the channel to England on several occasions. During these visits, he brought his portraits to the Royal Academy, exhibiting there on at least four different occasions. This movement between France and England suggests a life spent navigating different social and artistic circles, moving between the studios of Paris and the galleries of London.

Artistic Interests and Collections

Beyond his own brushwork, Schwiter spent much of his life looking at the work of others. He was a connoisseur with a specific eye for the Old Masters, focusing heavily on the drawings of the previous century. He was among the first collectors of the 19th century to organize a deliberate group of French and Italian drawings, showing a preference for the lines and lightness of the 18th-century schools. His collection included works by Giambattista Tiepolo, and he also sought out English mezzotint portraits.

His interest in these works was not merely a hobby but a central part of his life as an aristocrat and painter. He gathered these pieces with a sense of purpose, assembling a significant body of work that reflected his taste for the delicate and the precise. Much of this gathered collection was eventually sold at auction in 1883 and 1886, after he had lost his sight in his later years.

Key Works and Subjects

Schwiter’s brush often turned toward the faces of his contemporaries and the nobility. In 1840, he produced a portrait of Charles Emmanuel, duc de Montmorency Luxembourg. His work also captured the likeness of his friend and former teacher, Eugène Delacroix. This portrait of Delacroix was completed a few years after 1830 and was later presented at the Salon of 1833.

The relationship between the two men was captured in reciprocal ways. While Schwiter painted Delacroix, he also became a central figure in the other man's work. He was the subject of one of Delacroix’s finest portraits, a full-length study that remains a notable piece of the era's portraiture. These subjects reflect a life spent navigating the social and artistic circles of Paris and beyond.
