The Life and Theories of Giles Hussey
Born in 1710 in Marnhull, United Kingdom, Giles Hussey was a painter who sought to bridge the gap between the visual and the auditory. After receiving a Catholic education in France, he apprenticed under Jonathan Richardson and later worked with Francesco Riari. His journey took him to Lincoln Cathedral, where he assisted Vincenzo Damini, and eventually to Italy. While in Rome, Hussey developed unique theories regarding the nature of beauty, attempting to use mathematics to identify its essence. He proposed a Harmonic Scale where musical notes aligned with the colors of the spectrum, suggesting that red represented the note "A" while violet represented "A flat."
Portraiture and Legacy
Hussey is notably credited as the first British artist to create a portrait of Charles Edward Stuart, also known as the "Young Pretender." His depictions of the prince, including versions from 1734 and 1737, were noted for their accuracy, though some believed they were influenced by his preoccupation with his artistic theories. Despite his talent, his mathematical theories on art received little attention during his lifetime. After returning to England, he painted notable figures such as the Duke of Northumberland and Matthew Duane. He eventually abandoned painting in 1768 to pursue gardening at his family's property in Marnhull. He died in 1788 and was buried in Broad Hempston, Devon.
