Carleton Emmons Watkins was not a painter, but a master photographer whose lens captured the raw, untamed majesty of the nineteenth-century American West. Arriving in San Francisco around 1851, Watkins initially sought fortune in the mining boom, yet he found his true calling not in the pursuit of gold, but in the pursuit of light and landscape. His transition into the world of photography was almost accidental; while working as a clerk in a bookstore, he stepped into the studio of a local daguerreotypist and discovered an innate talent for the medium that would eventually change the course of American conservation history.

Utilizing custom-made mammoth plate cameras, Watkins produced massive glass plate negatives—some as large as 18 by 22 inches—which allowed him to capture breathtaking detail and a profound sense of scale.
