Between 1829 and 1836, he refined his technique under the guidance of Theodor Hildebrandt, absorbing the disciplined approach of the Düsseldorf School that would define his professional identity.

He moved between the bustling art circles of Düsseldorf and the more settled life in Elberfeld, establishing himself as a painter of character and scene.
