Early Life, Family and Training
Antonio Gionima was born in Venice in 1697. He came from a family rooted in the artistic traditions of Padua, where his father, Simone Gionima, worked as a painter. Simone had been a pupil of Cesare Gennari, and this lineage shaped the early years of Antonio Gionima. His first lessons in the craft came at home, guided by his father's hand.
As his training progressed, Antonio Gionima moved beyond the family circle to study under Aureliano Milani. This period of education provided a foundation before he eventually made his way to Bologna. There, he entered the studio of Giuseppe Maria Crespi. Crespi, a significant figure in the local scene, recognized the talent in the young man's drawings and his specific way of handling a brush.
Patrons, Workshop and Commissions
His training took him through several hands and cities. After his early education, he joined the workshop of Aureliano Milani in Rome. It was there that his approach began to take shape, moving from the lessons of his father toward a more developed way of seeing. Later, his presence in the studio of Giuseppe Maria Crespi left an impression; Crespi noticed the way Gionima handled his drawings and the specific, vivid quality of his style.
Work for private families and religious subjects defined his output. He produced a grand canvas depicting the History of Haman for the Ranuzzi family. Other commissions involved more specific devotional imagery, such as his picture of St. Florian and accompanying martyrs, a work that was later engraved by Girolamo Mattioli.
Key Works and Output
Gionima’s hand appears in various forms, from large canvases to small, intimate sketches. His work Joseph and Potiphar's Wife dates to about 1720. Other subjects in his repertoire include Lot and his daughters, as well as Cristo e l'adultera and Cristo guarisce l'indemoniato. These pieces show a focus on biblical narratives and human interaction.
In 1731, he produced a drawing titled Madonna and Child with Saint Joseph in the Carpenter Shop. He used red and white chalk on laid paper to execute this piece. The drawing captures a quiet moment within Joseph’s workshop. He also worked on The Annunciation around 1731.
