Daebudo Island (Daebudo) is known for a splendid ocean-view, and visitors can behold its beautiful scenery while watching the sunset gradually coloring the sea in red beyond the horizon. Also, grapes have become one of the main products produced in Daebudo, playing an important role in the local economy. For these reasons visitors can always find vineyards and vinyl greenhouses there. Using a vinyl greenhouse, which is the livelihood of the local farmers, I wanted to recreate this landscape of Daebudo as an art work-an installation piece that can still be shown after sunset. By installing landscapes that feature Daebudo’s locality in a vinyl greenhouse with lights, visitors can see the shadow of Daebudo’s sunset and vineyard views cast by the lights. At dusk, small fishing boats and seagulls are gently moving, and the shadows of Nueseom.Island, windmills, and people harvesting loads of grapes in a vineyard in Tando Port decorate the night sky of Daebudo in harmony.

Kunstnerens biografi

The Luminous Genesis of Lee Bo-hee

Born in the vibrant heart of Seoul in 1959, Lee Bo-hee has dedicated her career to translating the ephemeral beauty of the Korean landscape into a visual language composed of light and shadow. Her artistic foundation was forged at the prestigious Seoul National University, where she studied painting under the legendary master Lee Ungno. This mentorship was pivotal; from him, she inherited a spirit of experimentation and a profound respect for pushing the boundaries of traditional media. Under his guidance, her early fascination with both painting and sculpture evolved into a sophisticated exploration of how light can define form, setting the stage for a career defined by ethereal luminosity and an intense emotional depth that resonates far beyond the borders of South Korea.

The Soul of Deabu Island

At the center of Bo-hee’s creative universe lies Deabu Island, a place where the rugged topography of the Korean coast meets the infinite horizon. Her work serves as a profound meditation on this specific landscape, capturing the dramatic cliffs and the turbulent seas with a precision that feels both intimate and vast. She does not merely document the island; she recreates its very essence through light drawings that act as meditations on the passage of time. Her fascination extends to the local life of the region, particularly the vineyards and the rhythmic existence of the farmers. In her vision, the landscape is a living entity, where the shadows of windmills, fishing boats, and seagulls decorate the night sky in perfect harmony with the natural world.

Technique as a Medium for Memory

Bo-hee’s technical mastery lies in her ability to use graphite pencils to create sketches that possess the clarity of photographic prints while retaining an impressionistic soul. Her approach is remarkably precise, yet it avoids the coldness of photorealism, opting instead to capture the essence of a scene rather than its literal accuracy. This is most strikingly realized in her innovative installation pieces, where she utilizes vinyl greenhouses—a staple of the local Daebudo economy—to stage light-based landscapes. By manipulating light within these structures, she allows visitors to witness the shadows of sunsets and vineyard views cast as if by magic, even after the sun has set. Through this unique fusion of medium and environment, her work achieves a significant historical standing, securing her place in prestigious collections such as the Lee Ungno Museum and establishing her as a master of capturing the enduring power of nature.
