The life of Hubert Robert

Raný život, rodina a umělecké vzdělání

Úspěch a královská patronáž v Paříži

I když struktury starého režimu začaly praskat, jeho přítomnost v sálech Louvru zůstávala konstantní, což z něj činilo klíčovou postavu přechodu francouzského institucionálního umění.

Technika a charakteristický umělecký styl

Místo toho využíval atmosférickou perspektivu k tomu, aby změkčil vzdálené obzory, čímž vytvořil hmatatelný pocet hloubky a světla. Ovládal mistrovské umění iluze a pomocí světla a stínu manipuloval s vnímáním prostoru u diváka. Spojením pečlivého pozorování s rozbušenou představivostí konstruoval scény, kde fyzická realita kamenného oblouku či pomalu se rozpadající kolóny byla pozvedena díky pečlivě orchestrátrované, téměř teatrální atmosféře.

Capriccio a téma rozkladu

V těchto kompozicích záměrně zestawoval nesourodé prvky – antické monumenty, fantastické krajiny a idealizované postavy – aby vytvořil scény existující v napětí mezi realitou a představivostí. Nepoužíval štědře jen to, co bylo vidět; on konstruoval atmosféry melancholie a údivu. Propojením faktických architektonických detailů s představitelnými prostředími vytvořil pocit historie, který působil zároveň hmatatelně i snově. Tento přístup mu umožnil zkoumat plynutí času skrze čočku kamene a stínu.

Politické otřesy a pozdější léta

Bouřlivé vlny Francouzské revoluce přinesly Robertovi náhlé a osobní nebezpečí.

Významná díla a umělecké úspěchy

Ve Spojených státech sídlí tři jeho díla v Metropolitan Museum of Art v New Yorku, mezi které patří The Portico of a Country Mansion a Wandering Minstrels. Jeho působení sahá až do Německa a Švýcarska, přičemž Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe v Německu uchovává tři kusy, včetně díla Roman Capriccio.
