Born in Middelburg, Netherlands, in 1767, Simon de Koster moved through a period of profound European upheaval. His early training began at the Academy in his birthplace, where he first learned to translate the human likeness onto canvas. This foundation led him to become a pupil of Thomas Gael, a mentorship that helped shape his technical approach to the portrait. By 1788, his path took him away from the Low Countries, eventually leading to a life in London, where he remained active until his death in 1831.
His work is characterized by a certain precision, often captured in small-scale formats. He was a painter of the individual, focusing on the likenesses of those who defined the era. His skill was such that his drawings were frequently used as the basis for engravings, allowing his visual interpretations to reach a much wider audience through print.
The Nelson Connection
The most significant chapter of de Koster’s career is inextricably linked to the image of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson. His depictions of the naval hero became a standard for how the man was perceived by the public. It was a relationship of mutual respect; Nelson himself reportedly approved of one of de Koster's drawings as a particularly accurate representation of his own likeness.
The artist's output during this period included several variations of the Admiral's image:
- An oil on canvas portrait of the 1st Viscount Nelson.
- A drawing from 1800 that served as the basis for stipple engravings.
- Small-scale works that captured the profile and character of the naval commander.
Artistic Legacy
De Koster’s significance lies in his ability to capture the likenesses of the men who shaped the early nineteenth century. While his life was spent largely in the service of portraiture, his influence was felt through the reproduction of his work. His drawings were translated into line and stipple engravings, ensuring that his specific vision of historical figures survived long after the original pigments had settled.
