qianlong emperor, also known by his temple name emperor gaozong of qing, personal name hongli, was the sixth emperor of the qing dynasty and the fourth qing emperor to rule over china proper. born on september 25, 1711, and passing away on february 7, 1799, qianlong's life marked a significant period in chinese history.

early life and accession to the throne

as the fourth son of yongzheng emperor, qianlong was adored by both his grandfather, kangxi emperor, and his father. this led to speculation that he would be designated as the crown prince, despite not being officially proclaimed until the death of his father in 1735.

reign and military campaigns

during qianlong's reign, which lasted from 1735 to 1796, he oversaw numerous military campaigns into inner asia, burma, nepal, and vietnam. he also suppressed rebellions in jinchuan and taiwan. domestically, qianlong was a major patron of the arts, sponsoring the compilation of the complete library of the four treasuries, the largest collection ever made of chinese history.
