Early Life and Family Background

William Egley was born in Doncaster in 1798. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Nottingham, where his father worked as a confidential agent to the Walkers of Eastwood. While the household settled into this new environment, a small box of colours was given to William in his early youth. This gift stayed with him, quietly strengthening a desire to paint that sat alongside his family's other expectations.

His father had different plans for the boy and his brother. The intention was for both sons to enter the trade of bookselling. This path led them away from the quiet study of pigment and toward the structured world of commerce. They eventually moved to London, finding work at the publishing house and bookshop of William Darton on Holborn Hill. There, amidst the scent of paper and ink, William spent his days working within the trade his father had chosen for him.

Artistic Training and Early Success

The path to painting did not come through a formal studio or a master's guidance. Instead, Egley's education was gathered in the quiet observation of exhibitions at Somerset House in London. He spent his time there, watching the works on the walls, absorbing the visual language of others. This self-directed study allowed him to develop his hand without the structure of professional teaching.

By 1824, his independent practice had reached a point where his work was recognized by the Royal Academy. He presented two finished portraits to the exhibition that year: one of Colonel Ogleby and another of the actor Richard Yates. These early pieces marked his entry into the professional circle of London painters.

Exhibition History and Career

His presence in the London art scene was marked by a steady, persistent rhythm. He did not rely on sudden bursts of activity, but rather a lifelong commitment to the exhibition circuit. This consistency saw him sending works to the Royal Academy for many decades, eventually totaling 160 miniatures submitted to their exhibitions. His work appeared there regularly from the early 1820s until the year before he died.

Beyond the Academy, his reach extended to other established venues. He contributed two pictures to the British Institution and sent six works to the Suffolk Street Gallery. These submissions reflect a career spent navigating the formal structures of the Victorian art world, maintaining a presence in the galleries that defined the era.

Technique and Subject Matter

Egley worked primarily as a miniature painter, focusing his attention on the small scale. He applied watercolour to ivory, a choice that required a steady hand and a delicate touch to manage the smooth, non-porous surface. This method allowed for a level of detail suited to the intimate nature of his portraits. His work often appeared in small formats, such as a piece from about 1835 that measures only 5,6 x 4 cm.

He found particular success when painting children. His temperament was noted as being genial, a quality that helped him become a favourite among young subjects. This ability to connect with children likely influenced the ease with which he captured their likenesses. While he produced many portraits, his skill in handling the likeness of youth remained a significant part of his output.

Later Years and Death

In his later years, Egley remained a fixture of the London art scene, maintaining a steady presence in the exhibition rooms of the Royal Academy and other galleries. His life was marked by personal shifts, including being married twice. From his first marriage, he left behind a son, William Maw Egley, who followed a similar path into the arts as a painter of historical subjects.

The quiet work of the miniature painter came to an end in London. He died on 19 March 1870, at the age of 72.
