The Life and Family of Pierre Bernard
Paris, 1704. The parish of Saint-Jacques-la-Boucherie marks the beginning of Pierre Bernard's life. He enters a world where art is a family trade, a lineage of hands shaping clay and pigment. His father, also named Pierre Bernard, works as both a painter and a sculptor. This dual heritage of form and color defines the environment into which the younger Bernard is born.
The family connection to the arts extends further back, reaching toward Marseille. There, his grandfather, the sculptor Honoré Bernard, had already established a presence in the craft. This lineage of creators places Pierre Bernard within a specific tradition of French craftsmanship. He grows up amidst the tools of his predecessors, a product of a multi-generational commitment to visual expression.
His life follows the trajectory of a professional portraitist and painter. While his roots are firmly planted in the Parisian landscape of the early eighteenth century, his path remains tied to the technical precision required by his family's history. He carries the weight of these names—painter, sculptor, and grandson of a master—into his own career as a specialist in the likeness of others.
Artistic Style and Professional Focus
The XVIII century finds Pierre Bernard operating within the strictures of Classicism. He focuses his technical attention on the genre of portraiture, working primarily as a pastellist. This medium allows for a specific handling of light and texture on the skin of his subjects. His professional life revolves around the capture of likeness through the soft, powdery application of pastel pigments.
His approach remains rooted in the formal traditions of the period. He does not deviate into the more experimental or chaotic movements of his era, maintaining a commitment to the clarity and order inherent in the Classical style. The precision of his portraiture relies on the delicate layering of colors to define form and character. This specialization defines his entire body of work, centering his practice on the individual face and the social status it conveys.
