A Life Rooted in Asker

Otto Valstad grew up at Øvre Valstad Gård in Asker, the son of a builder and cabinetmaker. His early years were shaped by the hands-on work of his father, Andreas, and the musicality of his parents. Long before he was known for a brush, he was a collector, gathering small objects from the age of eight. This habit of looking closely at things followed him into adulthood. He trained as a cabinetmaker and worked as an elementary school teacher until 1899.

In 1893, he married Tilla Valstad. Together, they turned their home in Hvalstad into a place where people gathered. Their lives were not lived in isolation but among other artists and writers who passed through their doors. He studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry under Johan Nordhagen and spent time at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1897. These years abroad brought different light and perspective back to his work in Norway.

The Work of a Naturalist

His paintings often focused on the quiet details of Norwegian life. He worked within a naturalist style, capturing landscapes, portraits, and everyday scenes. Some of his pieces, like Fru Lina Brun from 1901, show a careful attention to the subject, perhaps even drawing from photographic references. His landscapes, such as Gammel Askergård i måneskinn, reflect the specific atmosphere of the local terrain.

Beyond the canvas, his hands were busy with many different tasks:

  • Illustration: He created drawings for books, including Aesop's Fables and several children's stories he wrote himself.
  • Decoration: He contributed to the decoration of Asker Church.
  • Craft: His training as a cabinetmaker informed his sense of structure and form.

His drawings, particularly those of children, possess a certain liveliness. While his line work could be dry, it captured the essence of his subjects without unnecessary flourish.

A Legacy Left to the Community

Valstad was as much a preserver of history as he was a creator. He spent much of his life rescuing old furniture, stabburs, and cultural objects from being lost to time. He built a gallery in 1937 to house his own works and his growing collection. This collection was not merely for himself; it was a way to hold onto the identity of the local area.

In 1949, he and Tilla made a decision that would change the landscape of Asker. They bequeathed their property, including the house and the extensive collection of art and historical objects, to the municipality. This gift became the foundation for the Asker Museum. Today, the items he gathered and the works he painted remain accessible, kept in the very place where he lived and worked.
