Early Life and Artistic Training
Nils Erik Gjerdevik entered the world in Oslo, Norway, on August 7, 1962. His early years in Norway provided the foundation for a life that would eventually find its center in the creative circles of Denmark. He moved through his formative years with a growing interest in the visual arts, seeking out the discipline required to master his craft. This pursuit led him to the halls of H.C. Høiers malerskole, where he spent time in 1983 refining his understanding of the painter's hand.
The hunger for deeper knowledge eventually drew him across borders. In 1984, Nils Erik Gjerdevik traveled to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague to continue his studies. This period of training allowed him to expand his horizons beyond his initial surroundings, shaping the perspective he would carry throughout his career. He eventually settled into a life of making, living and working in Copenhagen until his passing in Frederiksberg on September 26, 2016.
Technique and Artistic Style
His hands moved between many different mediums, finding a way to speak through painting, ceramics, graphic art, and various objects. He was drawn to the non-figurative, spending much of his career exploring the delicate tension between form and color. In his paintings, he often favored monochrome palettes and relied on grid-like compositions to organize his vision. These works were not merely studies of pigment, but investigations into how a shape might hold its own against a field of color.
When he turned his attention to clay, his approach became both paradoxical and innovative. He did not seek the traditional stability often expected of sculpture; instead, his ceramic works often appeared to be on the verge of collapse, as if gravity were a constant, heavy presence in the room. These sculptures frequently drew inspiration from science fiction, taking on the appearance of space stations or strange, futuristic worlds. He built structures that seemed to exist in a space between the utopian and the dystopian, challenging the very boundaries of architectural convention.

Public Commissions and Awards
The recognition of his talent came in a significant way in 2002, when he was honored with the Eckersberg Medal. This distinction arrived as his presence in the Danish art scene grew through various public engagements. He found himself called upon to bring his vision to significant architectural spaces, including the University of Copenhagen, where he worked on the Søndre Campus. His ability to engage with large-scale environments led to further invitations, such as his commission for the Opera House on Holmen in Copenhagen about 2004.
His reach extended beyond the walls of academic and cultural institutions into the public consciousness through competitive selection. In 2011, he won the "Our Art" competition, an initiative organized by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. This victory highlighted a capacity to translate his personal language of form and color into works that resonated with a broader audience. His career was marked by these steady contributions to the visual landscape of Denmark, moving between the intimate scale of a studio and the monumental requirements of public architecture.
Where to See the Works Today
To encounter the physical presence of his creations, one must travel through the various galleries and museums that have gathered his legacy. His works found their way into the permanent collections of several significant institutions across Denmark and Norway. In Denmark, his art resides within the Statens Museum for Kunst and the National Gallery of Denmark. These collections hold pieces that reflect his long engagement with form and color. One might also find his handiwork at the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, or within the halls of the Esbjerg Kunstmuseum. The reach of his practice extended further to the Horsens Kunstmuseum and the Vejle Kunstmuseum, where his presence remains part of the local artistic record.
The reach of his influence crossed borders, finding a home in the collections of neighboring lands. In Norway, his works are held by the Nasjonalgalleriet in Oslo, ensuring his vision remains part of the national heritage of his birth. Across the water in Sweden, the Malmö Konstmuseum maintains his works within its care. These various repositories ensure that his explorations of space and material continue to be available for those who seek to study the way he shaped his medium.
