Marc Maet did not settle for the easy path of mere representation. His work belongs to the era of Neo-expressionism, a movement that rejected the coldness of minimalism in favor of a raw, visceral return to the figure and the act of painting itself. Born in Schoten, Maet developed a technical foundation that was both disciplined and experimental. He studied painting and etching at the Academy in Ghent between 1974 and 1980, a period that provided the structural rigor necessary to support his later, more aggressive explorations of form.
His practice was defined by a refusal to remain within the boundaries of a single medium. He utilized acrylic and lacquer on canvas to create surfaces that possessed a physical, almost sculptural presence. This was not art meant for passive observation; it was art that demanded a confrontation with the material reality of the paint.
