The Life and Artistic Journey of Lothar Quinte
Lothar Quinte was a German painter of the avant-garde and a leading representative of Op-Art. Born in Nysa, Poland, he moved with his family to Leipzig at the age of four. His formal training began with an apprenticeship as a painter in Leipzig from 1937 to 1941. Following his military service as a volunteer in a paratrooper unit and a brief period in British captivity, he attended the Kloster Bernstein art school between 1946 and 1951, studying under Hans Ludwig Pfeiffer and HAP Grieshaber.
His career was marked by diverse creative endeavors, including work with the Bernsteiner Puppenbühne and various commissions for stained glass and murals. He designed windows for several churches, such as St. Bonifatius in Metzingen and St. Augustinus in Esslingen-Zollberg, as well as the Lübecker Dom. His large-scale works included a tapestry for the Vicelinkirche in Hamburg-Sasel and a massive tapestry titled Werkreihe Corona. In 1975, following an artistic crisis, he undertook a world trip to India and Egypt, later establishing an annual winter studio in Goa.
Recognition and Legacy
Throughout his career, Quinte received several honors, including the Kunstpreis der Jugend in 1953 and the Burda-Preis für Malerei in 1965. He was awarded the Kulturpreis Schlesien from the state of Lower Saxony in 1993 and was named Professor h. c. by the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1995.
In his later years, he resided in Wintzenbach, France, where he continued to work. His final artistic contribution was the creation of windows for the chapel in Champenay. He passed away in Wintzenbach in 2000.
