A Life of Shifting Forms
The story begins in Chorlton upon Medlock, near Manchester, on 17 January 1873. A young Lawrence Atkinson moves toward Paris, driven by the structured discipline of musical composition. The sounds of the conservatory define his early years. He is a musician first. However, the pull of the visual world eventually draws him back to London. Here, the focus shifts from the auditory to the canvas.
The early works are landscapes. They carry the weight of French influence, specifically the bold color palettes of Matisse and the Fauves. These paintings capture the natural world through a lens of intense, non-naturalistic color. Most of these early explorations are now lost to time, leaving only fragments of his initial vision.
The Vorticist Shift
A radical transformation occurs when Atkinson encounters the work of Wyndham Lewis and the Vorticists. The fluid landscapes of his youth vanish. In their place comes a sharp, jagged energy. This is not a gradual change but a sudden realignment of his entire aesthetic. He adopts the harder edges and mechanical rhythms of the movement.
His creative output expands beyond the brush. Atkinson becomes a Modernist poet, using language to mirror the fractured, energetic spirit of his new visual direction. His identity as an artist, musician, and poet merges into a single, multifaceted pursuit of modern expression.
Final Days in Paris
The trajectory ends where much of his inspiration began. Atkinson moves back to Paris, the city that once hosted his musical studies. The movement through different disciplines—music, painting, and poetry—reaches its conclusion in France. On 21 September 1931, the life of this English polymath comes to an end.
