The Life and Art of Jules Ernest Renoux
Jules Alphonse Ernest Renoux was a French painter who worked during the height of the Belle Epoque and the Impressionism movement. Born in Romeny-sur-Marne, France, he was the son of Jules Alphonse Renoux and Ernestine Veron. After moving to Paris with his mother, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under teachers Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alfred Philippe Roll. His professional career included collaborations with Roll on painted ceilings for the Petit Palais, the Sorbonne, and the Hôtel de Viller.
Renoux’s artistic style was characterized by a palette of ochre and yellow-orange, often used to capture street scenes and the dapple of sunlight on tree-shaded avenues. He was noted for his skill in perspective and his ability to place vividly sketched figures at varying distances from the spectator. While he enjoyed painting the human form—frequently using members of his family as models—he was a shy individual who preferred to sketch from obscure corners rather than in the open streets.
Exhibitions and Legacy
Throughout his career, Renoux exhibited at various prestigious venues, including the Salon National des Beaux-Arts and the Galerie Bernheim. His work earned him recognition through associations with patrons like Count de Zogheb and the industrialist Auguste Magnère. His paintings have been featured in exhibitions from Monte Carlo to New York, and ten of his works are held in the permanent collection of the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux Arts de la ville de Paris.
In Romeny-sur-Marne, a museum known as la Maison Renoux is dedicated to his life and work, preserving his former studio within its garden. Renoux eventually settled permanently in Romeny-sur-Marne after losing his Paris studio in 1928.
