The Life and Artistic Journey of Helmi Biese

Born in Helsinki, Finland, Helmi Biese was a painter who dedicated much of her life to capturing the essence of the natural world. After attending a Swedish girls' school in Helsinki, she enrolled at the drawing school of the Finnish Art Society at the age of seventeen. To secure her livelihood, she trained as an art teacher at the private academy of Adolf von Becker between 1884 and 1888. Her early career saw her participating in an opposition exhibition organized by a group of young Finnish artists, including Gunnar Berndtson, Väinö Blomstedt, and Ellen Thesleff. Biese also contributed illustrations to the publication Nuori Suomi.

Her professional life was marked by both recognition and personal struggle. In 1901, her work was featured at the 12th Exhibition of the Vienna Secession. While she achieved success with a solo exhibition at Salon Strindberg in 1920, the unexpected death of her husband in 1925 necessitated her return to teaching at the Helsinki School of Applied Arts. This teaching commitment impacted her ability to fully pursue her art, leading her to feel she had not reached her full potential.

Style and Subject Matter

Biese’s work primarily focused on landscapes, though she also painted people and flowers. She was particularly drawn to the clear light of winter days and snowy landscapes, as well as the Finnish archipelago during the summer. Her artistic style evolved from the realism and plein-air painting of the 1880s into a more decorative approach in the 1890s, influenced by symbolism and Japanese art, which emphasized a single, flexible line. She was known for her ability to compose large-scale landscapes from various nature studies, often utilizing a bird's-eye perspective.

Her fascination with the dynamics of her environment is evident in her depictions of:

One of her most significant works is the monumental winter view of Pyynik, and she expressed a deep connection to the resilience of nature, specifically through her interest in the pine tree and its struggle against the elements.
