The Life and Artistic Evolution of Frank-Will
Born in Nanterre, France, the painter and watercolorist known as Frank-Will underwent a distinctive evolution in his professional identity. To distinguish his work from his father, the painter Frank Myers Boggs, he experimented with several signatures, including Franque, Frank, William Frank, and Franck-Will, before finally settling on Frank-Will in 1921. His early works, which included landscapes of the environs of Autouillet, date back to 1916. Throughout his career, he also utilized the pseudonym Belliot and, between 1936 and 1939, the name Naudin to differentiate certain subjects.
His artistic output was deeply tied to the urban landscape of Paris, where he became a prominent figure of the Montmartre scene. His depictions of Paris, including views of the Sacré-Cœur, the Opéra Garnier, the Gare du Nord, and the Colonne Vendôme, were widely popularized through postcards. Beyond the city, his travels led him to capture the Normandy coast, including Rouen and Honfleur, as well as La Rochelle, Amiens, and Barfleur. He also held a particular fascination with large sailing ships, often depicting them in compositions that included imaginary naval battles.
