Born in the vibrant cultural landscape of Osaka, Japan, in 1960, Takeshi Yamada has spent a lifetime blurring the boundaries between the biological and the imagined. His artistic odyssey began much earlier than his formal training, as a young boy of twelve wielding a paintbrush to capture the world around him. This early immersion in observation laid the groundwork for a career defined by an unsettling yet profound fascination with the mechanics of life and death. By the age of sixteen, Yamada had committed himself irrevocably to the path of an artist, a decision that would eventually lead him from the prestigious Osaka University of Arts across the Pacific to the heart of the American art scene.

Yamada’s academic journey in the United States served as a crucible for his developing aesthetic. Moving to America as an exchange student in 1983, he immersed himself in the rigorous traditions of the California College of the Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Earning his Bachelor of Fine Art in 1985 and later a Master of Fine Art from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design in 1987, he refined a technical prowess that would allow him to execute even his most complex and grotesque visions with breathtaking precision.
