Eduard Wilhelm Pose was born on 9 July 1812 in Düsseldorf, Germany. His early years were spent following his father, Ludwig Pose, a decorative painter, through the Rhineland. As a boy, he accompanied his father on various commissions, watching the way light and texture were applied to surfaces. A visit to Rheinstein Castle, where his father had been commissioned by Prince Frederick, left a lasting impression on him. It was there that he decided to follow his father's path and become a painter himself.
In 1829, he entered the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he would remain until 1836. During his time at the academy, he sought out specific guidance in the study of nature. From 1832 to 1833, he studied under the landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. This period of formal training helped him move toward the specific ways he would eventually render the terrain of the Hunsrück and Eifel regions.
The atmosphere at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf grew heavy with tension by 1836. Pose and several other students found themselves at odds with the academy's director, Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow. This friction with the conservative leadership led to a sudden departure, as the students chose to leave the institution behind. This break from the established academic order pushed Pose toward Munich.
In Munich, he found a place within the studios of Carl Rottmann. This period allowed him to refine his approach away from the rigid constraints he had faced in Düsseldorf. After a time spent elsewhere, he returned to Munich in 1838. His work during these years began to find its way into significant collections. A painting of Tyrol Castle, which he exhibited in Brussels, caught the attention of King Leopold I, who purchased the piece.
The years between 1842 and 1845 were spent in Italy, with much of that time centered in Rome. The light there seemed to change the way he handled color. When he returned from these southern landscapes, his palette had brightened considerably. He did not stay away from the Mediterranean for long, returning later in 1849 to visit Southern Italy, Sicily, and Florence.
During his time in Düsseldorf, he lived with his sister and her husband, the architect Max Joseph Custodis. This period of his life was marked by a steady connection to the local landscape and the social circles of the region. He moved through the Rhineland, often traveling with other artists to capture the specific textures of the terrain.
After 1845, Pose returned to Frankfurt am Main. His presence in the city brought him into the circle of artists associated with Philipp Veit. This period saw him settling into the social and creative rhythms of the local art community. He remained connected to the landscape traditions he had cultivated through his earlier travels and studies.
In his later years, his life became intertwined with the artists' colony at Kronberg im Taunus. This involvement placed him among a specific group of painters working in the region. He lived through the shifting landscape of German art, maintaining his focus on the natural world. Pose died in Frankfurt am Main on 14 March 1878, at the age of 65.
