          The Convergence of Two Worlds

          Born in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, in 1964, Shane William Cotton emerged as a profound voice in contemporary art, carrying with him the weight and wisdom of a dual heritage. As a descendant of Ngāti Rangi, Ngāti Hine, and Te Uri Taniwha, alongside Pākehā lineage, his very existence serves as a bridge between two historically colliding cultures. This intersection is not merely biographical but is the fundamental engine of his creative practice. His work does not simply depict history; it interrogates the complex, often painful, layers of biculturalism and the enduring legacies of colonialism that continue to shape the New Zealand landscape.

          A Visual Language of Colonialism and Spirit

          Cotton’s canvases are dense with a meticulously curated iconography that draws from both Māori and European historical sources. He employs a complex set of symbols to navigate the delicate terrain of cultural identity, spirituality, and the cyclical nature of life and death.
